Re: Dog Population Management (Suprelorin 9.4 implants for temporary sterilisation)
Access to veterinary services in northern Manitoba is geographically challenging for many remote communities. As a result, we have dog overpopulation issues in (community name) which can affect public health and safety and put community members, especially children, at increased risk of dog bites. Surgical sterilization is challenging in the winter months due to cold temperatures as many dogs spend time outdoors.
To manage our dog overpopulation, we agree to allow the Winnipeg Humane Society to administer Suprelorin 9.4 implants in male and female dogs with owner consent. Every dog will require an owner to fill a consent form provided by the Winnipeg Humane Society in order to receive the implant. Owners will also receive a discharge form that explains how to care for their dog post implant with contact information for the Winnipeg Humane Society.
We understand that with Suprelorin 9.4mg implants provide only temporary sterilization for up to 12 months and that those male and female dogs need to be kept separate for 8 weeks post implant as there is a delay in efficacy of the implant. We also understand that there may be complications from the implant such as increased aggression, prolonged heat or discharge in female dogs, and infection; community members and owners can contact the Winnipeg Humane Society with any concerns.
Sincerely,
Chief and Council
